AC leak causing black mold: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little and now I'm seeing these small black spots along the base of the wall behind the curtain. I've tried wiping it down with vinegar, but the damp smell comes back within a day. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspection service?

Based on the symptoms you described – the AC leak, recurrent black spots, and the persistent damp smell returning after a DIY cleaning attempt – this is a classic case requiring professional intervention. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture from the leak has likely penetrated the gypsum board (drywall) and possibly the insulation behind it, creating a perfect hidden reservoir for mold growth like Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold).

Vinegar or stronger cleaners only address the visible colony, not the root moisture problem or the deeply embedded hyphae (the root system of the mold). The recurring smell is a major red flag confirming the growth is active and widespread within the wall cavity.

For a proper remediation, the affected section of drywall must be carefully removed, the cavity inspected, cleaned, and treated with professional-grade antimicrobials, and then rebuilt. This process requires containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, as per UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor environmental quality.

Given the potential health risks from mycotoxins and the structural damage caused by prolonged moisture, I strongly recommend you call in a certified mold inspection service immediately. We can perform a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent.
