How to treat and prevent black mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our Jumeirah villa feels damp and cold to the touch, and we've just spotted a patch of black mold. We keep the AC running, but with all the humidity lately, it feels like a losing battle. What's the best way to treat this spot immediately and prevent it from coming back for good?

Okay, so you're dealing with a classic Dubai problem. That cold, damp feeling behind the wardrobe is a huge red flag for condensation, which is the main food source for mold here. The AC might be running, but if it's not the right temperature or the airflow is blocked, you're just creating a cold surface for all that humid air to condense on.

For immediate action: First, pull that wardrobe away from the wall. You need airflow, STAT. For that black patch, do NOT just spray bleach. It'll lighten the color but won't kill the roots and the fumes are nasty. Instead, grab a microfiber cloth and a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proper EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (available at most hardware stores). Scrub the area thoroughly, and make sure you dry it completely with a fan afterward. Wear an N95 mask and gloves while you do this.

To prevent it from coming back for good, you gotta fix the environment. The wall needs to breathe. You can't have a massive piece of furniture sealed against it. Leave at least a 2-3 inch gap between the wardrobe and the wall. Secondly, check your AC settings. In this humidity, your AC should be set to 22-24°C to effectively remove moisture from the air, not just cool it. A dehumidifier in the room can be a game-changer.

Honestly, if the dampness is already feeling cold to the touch, there's a chance there's a bigger issue, maybe even a small hidden leak from a pipe or a crack in the wall that's letting in moisture. Surface cleaning won't fix that. For a villa in Jumeirah, you really should get a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact source of the moisture, which is crucial for a permanent fix. Otherwise, you're just playing whack-a-mole with it.
