Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet in the Jumeirah apartment has felt damp for the last couple of months, and I just found a few black spots on the back wall behind our winter clothes. I wiped it with vinegar but the smell is still there, and my husband thinks we need to call a professional. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner from Ace Hardware, or is this a sign of a bigger issue that needs an expert?

Based on your description, this absolutely warrants a professional inspection, and I'd strongly advise against a DIY approach with a store-bought cleaner. The dampness and persistent musty smell, even after cleaning, are classic red flags for hidden mold growth in the UAE. The high humidity here, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, is a massive catalyst for mold problems that are often far more extensive than what's visible.

Those black spots on the back wall are likely just the "bloom" of a much larger colony growing behind the drywall or within the wall cavity. This is extremely common when an external wall is affected by a small, unseen leak from AC condensation lines, a tiny plumbing seepage, or even minor water ingress from our occasional heavy rains. Vinegar or surface cleaners only address the aesthetic issue, not the root cause or the hidden microbial contamination, which continues to release spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom air.

For health and safety reasons, and to comply with Dubai Municipality's strict hygiene standards for residential properties, proper remediation involves containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the safe removal of affected porous materials. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the damage hidden within the structure.

Given the potential health risks and property damage, calling a professional is the only correct course of action. We can have a certified inspector on-site to conduct a full assessment. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
