Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed what looks like a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been really humid lately in Dubai. Is this something I can safely test and clean myself with a kit from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the details you've provided, that small patch of black mold on an exterior wall during a humid period is a classic sign of a condensation issue, very common here in Dubai due to our high humidity levels condensing on cooler surfaces.
For a very small patch (under 1 square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, I strongly advise against DIY test kits from hardware stores. They are notoriously unreliable, often giving false negatives, and they don't identify the species of mold, which is critical for understanding the health risk. True "black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum) requires a completely different, professional remediation protocol. Here in the UAE, proper identification is non-negotiable. Our building materials and climate create unique mold profiles. Scrubbing visible mold without identifying and addressing the underlying moisture source (like a potential thermal bridge in that exterior wall or high indoor humidity) is a temporary fix at best. The mold will almost certainly return. My professional recommendation is to call a pro for an inspection. We use precise tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the hidden moisture source that you can't see. Then, we take air and surface samples to be analyzed at an accredited lab to identify exactly what type of mold you're dealing with. This scientific approach is the only way to guarantee it's solved correctly and safely. For a proper assessment and to prevent it from coming back, it's best to get a certified expert to take a look.
