Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's gotten worse since the recent humidity, and my toddler has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional company for this?

Based on your description, this is a scenario we encounter frequently in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity. The combination of a confined space (the closet), organic material (clothes/dust), and the recent weather is a perfect storm for mold growth.

First, do NOT use bleach. While it may remove the visible black discoloration on non-porous surfaces, it is largely ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) deep within the material, causing the problem to return worse than before. It also poses significant respiratory hazards, especially in an enclosed space.

For a toddler showing symptoms like a stuffy nose, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. What you see on the surface is often just the "fruit" of the mold; the root system can be extensive behind the walls. Disturbing it with DIY cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening your child's reaction.

In the UAE, proper remediation isn't just about cleaning—it's about identifying and correcting the source of moisture to prevent recurrence, which requires specialized equipment like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters. Our certified technicians follow IICRC standards to ensure the mold is contained, removed safely, and the air is purified, not just for your toddler's health but for the entire household.

Given the health concern and the likelihood of hidden growth, a professional inspection is the prudent course of action. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine the extent of the problem and provide a clear path to a permanent solution.
