Could my AC be causing my morning dry throat and headache?« Back to Previous Page

For the last few mornings here in my Mirdif villa, I've woken up with a really dry, scratchy throat and a slight headache. It seems to get better after I leave the house for work, but it's worse on the weekends when I'm at home more. I'm wondering if it's the AC running constantly in this heat, maybe it needs a cleaning or there's a mold issue. Could this dry air from the unit actually cause these specific symptoms every morning?

Good question. This is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially during the summer months. The short answer is yes, your AC is a highly likely culprit for those specific morning symptoms.

The dry, scratchy throat is a classic sign of extremely low relative humidity. While our outside air is humid, the AC process removes moisture to cool the air. If the system is oversized, has a faulty humidistat, or is simply running constantly at a very low temperature, it can strip the indoor air of all moisture, leading to dehydration of your mucous membranes overnight. The headache can be a direct result of this dehydration or from poor indoor air quality (IAQ).

The fact that symptoms improve when you leave points directly to an environmental factor within your villa. Beyond just dry air, a poorly maintained AC unit can harbour and circulate mould spores, dust mites, and other allergens from a dirty filter or clogged drip pan. These contaminants can also cause the irritation and headaches you're describing.

My strong recommendation is to get a professional IAQ inspection. We would test for relative humidity levels (Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor comfort) and take air and surface samples to check for microbial growth. AC systems here require strict maintenance under UAE regulations; a simple deep clean of the ducts and coil might be the solution, but you need to identify the root cause first.
