How to safely clean mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks, and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Mirdif, and with the humidity lately, I'm panicking that it's making them sick. What is the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without using harsh chemicals around my family?

Alright, this is a very common situation here in Dubai, especially in areas like Mirdif with the recent humidity spikes. First, please don't panic, but do take this seriously. The coughing could definitely be related, as mold spores can irritate respiratory systems, especially in children.
For a small patch (less than about 1 square meter) that you've found early, you can attempt to clean it yourself, but safety is the absolute priority. You MUST contain the area to prevent spreading millions of spores. Seal off the room from the rest of the villa. Close the A/C vent and turn the system OFF. Open a window if possible for ventilation. Gear up properly. This is non-negotiable. You need an N95 respirator mask, goggles that seal around your eyes, and durable rubber gloves. Do not skip this. For cleaning, harsh chemicals like bleach are not only dangerous for your family to inhale but are also largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as they only bleach the surface mold while leaving the roots intact. I recommend a solution of distilled white vinegar and water (80/20 mix) or a concetrated hydrogen peroxide solution (3%). Scrub the area vigorously. The goal is to physically remove the biomass. However, and this is a critical point: if that wall is drywall or any porous material, and the mold has penetrated, cleaning the surface is only a temporary fix. The root structure (mycelium) will remain and it will grow back. The only true solution for porous materials is removal and replacement. Given that this is in your bedroom and your children are showing symptoms, my strong professional recommendation is to get a proper inspection. We need to identify the moisture source (could be a small leak in the wall, condensation from the AC, or just ambient humidity) and assess the full extent. DIY cleaning often just disturbs the mold, making the airborne spore count worse. For a definitive assessment and a remediation plan that follows UAE health and safety guidelines, it's best to call in a certified professional.
