How to safely remove mold from chiller and wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual ever since the weather got really humid last month. I finally pulled out our upstairs guest room’s chiller unit to check, and the back of it and the wall behind it are covered in black and greenish fuzzy mold. I’m really worried about them breathing this in every night. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this mold out of the chiller and the wall to make sure it doesn't come back and affect my family's health?

Based on the situation you've described, this is a serious contamination issue that requires immediate attention, especially with children involved. The fuzzy black and green growth is a significant indicator of active colonization, likely due to the high humidity and condensation typical in our UAE climate.

For the chiller unit itself, do not attempt to run it. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water and carefully wipe down the accessible interior and exterior plastic components. However, the internal coils and drip pan are extremely difficult to clean properly without professional-grade biocides and disassembly tools. DIY cleaning often just spreads the spores and doesn't address the root moisture problem.

The wall behind the unit is the bigger concern. The mold has penetrated the porous paint and plaster. Scrubbing it with bleach or detergent is insufficient and can actually amplify the problem by releasing a massive amount of spores into the air. This wall needs to be treated by a specialist using approved antimicrobial agents, following the strict guidelines set by Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of growth you've found, we strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified technicians use HEPA-contained negative air machines to prevent cross-contamination and industrial-strength, UAE-approved treatments to not only remove the visible mold but also the hidden roots and airborne spores. This is the only way to ensure it doesn't come back and your family is safe.
