Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our bedroom and found a big patch of black mold, probably from the AC condensation. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for about three years and never had this issue until now. I’m handy with tools, but my wife is worried it’s a bigger problem. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here?

Finding that kind of black mold, especially with your kids coughing, is definitely a cause for concern and you were right to investigate. Given the circumstances, I strongly advise against a DIY bleach clean.

Here's why: Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold root system hidden within the drywall or plaster. It only bleaches the surface you can see, leaving the main colony intact to regrow. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, potentially worsening your family's exposure and symptoms. The coughing is a clear indicator of a health impact.

In the UAE's climate, AC condensation is a prime cause, and the problem is often more extensive than the visible patch. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is crucial to find the full extent of the water intrusion and mold growth. For a villa in Jumeirah Park, the issue could be with the AC drain line, insulation, or a leak in the wall.

Our remediation protocol follows strict IICRC standards. We contain the area with negative air pressure, safely remove contaminated materials, use EPA-approved antimicrobials, and most importantly, identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence. For the health of your family, a professional assessment is essential.
