Black mold in wardrobe: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe on the outer wall. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Good question. This is a very common issue we see in Dubai, especially in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The combination of our extreme humidity and the thermal bridging that often occurs on outer walls creates a perfect breeding ground for mold.

That black patch is almost certainly Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are extremely common here. The key concern is you've spotted it on the outer wall, which suggests a potential condensation issue or even a tiny hidden leak from the external wall system. The fact you're worried it's spreading behind the clothes is a valid concern; mold growth is often more extensive than what's visible on the surface.

Regarding DIY: Using bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water, which the mold can feed on, and it only bleaches the surface pigments without addressing the root hyphae (the "roots" of the mold) deep within the plaster or drywall. Vinegar can be slightly more effective on some surface growth but is completely insufficient for a recurring problem.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square foot), you might manage it by cleaning with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, wearing proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves), and fixing the humidity source with a dehumidifier. However, given the location on an outer wall and your suspicion of hidden growth, this is a case where I strongly recommend a professional inspection.

We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to determine the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination behind the walls. Remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about identifying and rectifying the moisture problem to prevent immediate recurrence, which is a requirement under Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines.

For a proper assessment and to ensure it's handled safely, it's best to call a pro. You can reach our certified inspectors at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
