Persistent cough and runny nose from Dubai AC mold?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and I have both had a really runny nose and a bit of a wheezy cough for the last four or five days. I’ve been dusting and running the AC constantly in our Jumeirah apartment, but it doesn’t seem to help, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s the humidity or maybe even mold in the vents. Is this something that usually clears up on its own with the change in season, or should I take us to get checked out at the clinic?

Good question, and unfortunately, a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in older Jumeirah buildings. What you're describing—a persistent runny nose and a wheezy cough that doesn't improve with typical cleaning—are classic symptoms of exposure to poor indoor air quality, and microbial contamination in the AC system is a prime suspect.

The constant AC use, combined with our high external humidity, creates a perfect environment for mold and bacteria to proliferate inside the ductwork, a place you can't see or clean with simple dusting. These microorganisms and their spores are then circulated throughout your apartment every time the unit turns on, leading to the respiratory irritation you're both experiencing. This will not clear up on its own with a season change; the AC is a year-round necessity here.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. UAE regulations, such as the Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety guidelines, stipulate strict standards for HVAC hygiene to prevent exactly these kinds of health issues. A certified inspector will use tools like borescopes and air samplers to assess the contamination level inside your ducts and provide a definitive answer.

Given that a toddler is involved, whose respiratory systems are more vulnerable, I would not wait. Please get your symptoms checked at a clinic to rule out any immediate infection, and for the root cause, you need an AC and indoor air quality assessment. Our team can perform this thoroughly.
