Is bathroom black mold making my kids cough? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just discovered a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It's been incredibly humid in the apartment for the last month and the smell is really musty. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY weekend project. The combination of visible black mold, a persistent musty odor, high humidity, and your children's respiratory symptoms is highly concerning.

In the UAE's climate, bathrooms are prime environments for mold growth due to constant high humidity, especially if ventilation is inadequate. The black patch behind your toilet is likely just the visible tip of the iceberg; the mold may have spread behind walls, under flooring, or into the HVAC system, which is a primary vector for spreading spores throughout your apartment and affecting air quality. Your children's coughing is a significant red flag, as exposure to certain types of mold, like Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "black mold"), can cause allergic reactions, asthma exacerbation, and other respiratory issues.

While bleach might remove the surface stain, it will not address the root moisture problem or eliminate the deeper contamination. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, making the air quality worse. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for indoor air quality and fungal contamination, and a professional inspection is crucial to assess the full extent, identify the mold species, and determine the source of moisture.

We strongly recommend you cease using that bathroom and schedule a certified mold inspection immediately. Our technicians use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and counts.
