Can we clean black mold ourselves or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, or can we handle it ourselves with a vinegar solution this weekend?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common concern here in Dubai, especially with our recent humidity levels.

A small, isolated patch (less than 1 square foot) on a non-porous surface like a closet wall can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner. You can clean it with a vinegar solution or a specialized mold-cleaning product, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the location—a closet storing fabrics—the risk of hidden growth and cross-contamination is significantly higher. Mold spores can easily transfer to your winter clothes, creating a larger problem.

The urgency comes from the fact you've just noticed it. Mold is a symptom of a moisture issue. In our climate, the primary cause is nearly always condensation from high humidity or a small, hidden leak in the AC drain line or building envelope, which is extremely common in UAE properties. Simply cleaning the visible patch without identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture means it will 100% return, often worse.

For these reasons, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the humidity that's feeding the mold, which is almost impossible to accurately diagnose yourself. This ensures the problem is solved permanently, not just the symptom cleaned.

If the area is larger than a square foot, or if you or any family members have respiratory issues, professional remediation is not just recommended, it's essential for your health.
