Can a dehumidifier fix a musty closet smell?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in our Mirdif villa has developed a really strong, damp smell over the last couple of weeks, especially after the humidity spiked. I've pulled everything out and cleaned the floors, but the musty odor just comes back. I’m worried it’s something in the walls or under the tiles. Is this something I can fix with a dehumidifier and some product from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional?

That's a very common question here in Dubai, especially after a humid spell. While a dehumidifier is a fantastic part of the solution, it is rarely the complete fix for a persistent, recurring musty odor, particularly in a villa in Mirdif.

The musty smell is microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), a gaseous byproduct from active mold or bacterial growth. A dehumidifier addresses the humidity that these organisms thrive on, lowering the relative humidity (ideally below 60%) to inhibit further growth. However, it does nothing to address the existing biological contamination itself. If the source is embedded—which your suspicion about the walls or under the tiles is likely correct—the dehumidifier's dry air will simply blow over the active colonies, temporarily masking the smell but not eliminating it. The odor will return the moment the humidity climbs again.

In the UAE's climate, with its high ambient humidity and common use of chilled-water AC systems that can create condensation issues, the source is often a hidden leak or severe condensation within a partition wall or under the screed. DIY solutions from Ace might surface-clean but won't penetrate to the root cause.

For a strong, recurring odor that survives a thorough cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion without destructive investigation. This is crucial, as Dubai Municipality regulations have specific protocols for mold remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing cross-contamination.

My advice: don't just mask it. Get it diagnosed properly. You can give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can tell you definitively if it's a simple fix or something more serious.
