Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom has been smelling a bit damp for the last few weeks, and I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall and found a whole patch of fuzzy black spots behind it. I've been running the AC constantly to fight the humidity. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do you think I need to call a professional company to check for hidden mold in the walls?

Based on the signs you've described—the damp smell and the fuzzy black growth behind furniture—this is a very common issue here in Dubai due to our high humidity levels. Constantly running the AC can actually create cold spots where condensation forms, especially behind large objects like wardrobes, providing the perfect breeding ground for mold.

While a small, surface-level patch might be manageable, I strongly advise against using bleach. It's mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep within porous materials like drywall or wood, and the fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. For anything more than a tiny area (less than 1 square foot), a professional assessment is crucial.

The visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg." If it's behind the wardrobe, there's a high probability the mold has penetrated the wall itself, requiring specialized equipment like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to assess the full extent of the damage. Disturbing it improperly can also release a large amount of spores into the air, which is a significant health risk, especially for children.

For a thorough inspection and a safe, effective remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines, it's best to call in a certified expert. We can identify the moisture source and ensure it's completely eliminated.
