Could AC mold in my Dubai apartment cause my cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my Jumeirah apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and over the last few days I've developed this really stuffy nose and a dry cough that won't go away. I've cleaned up the water, but I'm worried there might be mold growing inside the unit or in the walls that I can't see. Is this a common issue here in Dubai and could it be causing these symptoms?

Absolutely. As an IEQ specialist based in Dubai, I can confirm that a leaking AC unit is a primary suspect for the symptoms you're describing. This is an extremely common issue we encounter in the UAE, particularly in coastal areas like Jumeirah with high ambient humidity.

When an AC condensate drain line becomes blocked or the drip pan overflows, it creates a constant source of moisture. Inside the dark, cool AC unit and the surrounding walls, this is the perfect environment for mold growth, especially Aspergillus and Penicillium species. These molds release microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are then circulated throughout your apartment by the AC system itself.

Your stuffy nose and persistent dry cough are classic indicators of exposure to these bioaerosols. They are irritants to the respiratory tract, and for some individuals, they can trigger allergic reactions or exacerbate asthma. Simply cleaning the visible water isn't sufficient, as the colony is likely established within the ductwork, insulation, or inside the wall cavity.

In Dubai, property owners have a responsibility under Dubai Municipality's public health and safety regulations to maintain HVAC systems to prevent such conditions that can affect tenant health.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use borescopes to inspect inside the AC cassette and moisture meters to detect dampness in walls that isn't visible. DIY attempts often just disturb the mold, making the problem worse.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, it's a sign the contamination is active. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough assessment and a remediation plan. Your health isnt something to gamble with.
