Is black mold behind my wardrobe making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean before Eid. With the humidity rising again, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company involved, or is this something I can handle myself first?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible growth, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a significant indicator of a moisture problem, likely due to condensation from the AC unit's chilled surface or a small, hidden leak in the wall. The recent rise in humidity here in Dubai is a major catalyst, providing the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

The persistent coughing in your children is a classic allergic reaction to mold spores, which become airborne and are inhaled. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), all mold has the potential to cause health issues, especially in children, the elderly, or those with respiratory conditions like asthma.

Attempting a DIY cleanup is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the mold without proper containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration, and protective equipment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and potentially the entire home, exacerbating your kids' symptoms. Our remediation process is governed by strict IICRC S520 standards, which involve full containment, negative air pressure, and antimicrobial treatment to not only remove the visible growth but also eliminate the spores you can't see and address the underlying moisture source.

For your family's health, I recommend you call for a professional inspection and air quality test immediately. We can identify the exact species and the extent of the problem.
