Is black mold causing my kids' cough and need professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a patch of black mold on the back wall, and everything in there smells damp. This has probably been growing since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. Is this something I need to get treated professionally like, immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Based on your description, yes, the black mold you found is a very likely cause of the increased coughing in your children. Mold spores are a known respiratory irritant and allergen, and children are particularly susceptible. The damp, enclosed storage space under the stairs is a classic breeding ground, especially with our recent high humidity here in the UAE.

A bleach solution is not a recommended or effective long-term solution for a few critical reasons. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold, allowing it to regrow. More importantly, it can agitate the spores, releasing more into the air and potentially worsening your family's symptoms. It also introduces harsh chlorine fumes into a confined space.

For a situation like this, where health symptoms are present and the mold is on a structural wall (indicating potential moisture intrusion), a professional inspection is strongly advised. We would perform a thorough assessment to identify the moisture source (like a small condensation leak or lack of ventilation), test the mold type to understand the specific health risks, and determine the extent of the contamination, often hidden behind walls.

The remediation process involves containment, professional-grade antimicrobial treatment, and proper removal of contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes to prevent recurrence. This is not a typical DIY job if health is a concern.

Given the symptoms, I'd recommend acting promptly. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We can provide a clear assessment and a definitive plan to make your home safe again.
