Can I remove this black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the bedroom wardrobe on the exterior wall. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spread behind the plasterboard. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company to assess the damage?

Based on the description, this is a serious situation that absolutely requires a professional assessment and likely professional remediation. Here's why.

A large patch of black mold on an exterior wall is a major red flag. The high humidity we experience here in Dubai acts like fuel for mold growth. Your concern that it has spread behind the plasterboard is very valid; it almost certainly has. Mold hyphae (the root-like structures) penetrate porous materials like drywall and insulation, meaning the visible patch is often just the "fruit" of a much larger problem hidden within the wall cavity.

Attempting a DIY fix with vinegar is ineffective for several reasons. First, vinegar may temporarily clean the surface but it does not kill the root system or address the moisture source. Second, and most critically, improper disturbance of the mold—like scrubbing it—will release a massive amount of toxic spores into your bedroom's air, drastically increasing your exposure and contaminating other areas of your home. This poses significant health risks, especially for those with respiratory issues.

In the UAE, proper remediation follows strict IICRC guidelines. It requires containment of the area with negative air pressure, professional-grade HEPA filtration to capture spores, safe removal of contaminated porous materials (like the plasterboard and insulation), and finally, hygienization of the entire area. The root cause, which is likely a combination of interstitial condensation and the intense ambient humidity, must also be diagnosed and resolved to prevent immediate recurrence.

For your family's health and to ensure the problem is solved correctly, you need a pro. Call us for a comprehensive inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We'll use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind the walls and give you a clear plan.
