Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. It's a small patch, maybe the size of my hand, but I'm worried it's making them sick. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this absolutely warrants a professional inspection, and I strongly advise against cleaning it yourself, especially with children experiencing symptoms.

Here’s why: The black spots you describe are a major red flag. In the UAE's humid climate, what you see on the surface is often just the "fruit" of the mold. The actual root system (hyphae) is likely growing deep into the drywall or plaster behind. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces; it only bleaches the visible colour on the surface while leaving the root structure intact, allowing it to grow back stronger. More critically, attempting to clean it yourself will disturb the colony, releasing a massive cloud of spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom air, which your family will then inhale, potentially worsening their cough and other respiratory issues.

Given that your children are already symptomatic, this is a serious health risk. The size (hand-sized) indicates a established colony. UAE regulations and best practices, especially in residential settings with vulnerable occupants, dictate that a certified professional should handle the assessment and remediation. We use specialized equipment like moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source causing the growth, and then perform containment and air scrubbing to safely remove the biomass without contaminating your entire home.

For your family's health, please do not attempt a DIY fix. Call us for a professional assessment. We can be reached at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com.
