AC making loud rattling noise - fix myself or call technician?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our main living room has started making a really loud rattling noise, like something is loose inside, whenever the fan kicks on. It just started two days ago and it's driving us crazy, especially in the evenings when we're trying to relax. The air is still cool, but the noise is unbearable. What could be causing this, and is it something I can fix myself or do I need to call a technician?

Based on the symptoms you're describing – a sudden, loud rattling noise from the AC unit when the fan starts, while cooling performance remains – this is a classic sign of a mechanical issue that requires attention.

The most probable cause is a foreign object, like a loose screw, small piece of debris, or a pebble from the surrounding construction, that has found its way into the fan blower assembly or the outdoor condenser unit. In the UAE's dusty environment, this is very common. Alternatively, the noise could indicate that the fan blade itself has become unbalanced or cracked, or that the motor's mounting bolts have worked loose due to constant vibration.

While the unit is still cooling, I strongly advise against running it for extended periods. The rattling signifies a failure in progress; a loose part can cause catastrophic damage to other components, like the fan motor or the compressor, turning a simple repair into a very expensive one.

For your safety and to protect the unit, please power it off at the circuit breaker. DIY repair attempts on sealed AC systems are not recommended. UAE regulations require that any work involving the pressurized refrigerant circuit must be handled by a certified technician holding a valid permit from the Dubai Civil Defence and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Opening the unit yourself could void its warranty and create a safety hazard.

This is a job for a professional. Our certified technicians are equipped to safely disassemble the unit, locate the source of the noise, and execute the proper repair. We can have someone out to you quickly to get your living room peaceful again.
