How to stop and prevent mold in Jumeirah Park closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park has started smelling really damp, especially after the AC runs for a while. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored in the back and found a few jackets with black speckles on them. We run the AC constantly but I’m worried this is the start of a bigger problem. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it from coming back?

Based on your description of a damp smell correlating with AC operation and visible black speckling on stored items, this is highly indicative of active mold growth, a very common issue in Jumeirah Park villas due to our high humidity.
The first and most critical step is to identify the moisture source. In a closet, this is often caused by a nearby AC unit. The drain line could be clogged or the drip pan overflowing, or cold air from a supply vent is causing condensation on the warmer walls inside the closet—a classic problem here. You must immediately stop the mold's water supply. For the affected jackets, do not simply wipe them. This can aerosolize spores. They need to be removed from the home, sealed in a plastic bag, and professionally cleaned or discarded. To stop the spread, the entire closet needs to be emptied. The surfaces should be carefully cleaned with an EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, which only removes the surface color. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture issue isn't resolved. Prevention is key. You MUST have a professional HVAC technician service the AC unit to ensure proper drainage and check for leaks. Furthermore, to prevent condensation, improve air circulation inside the closet. Leave the door ajar and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a vent grill in the closet door. For serious, recurring mold, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden moisture sources and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor air quality.
