Dry AC causing sore throats - humidifier or purifier needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids and I have been waking up with really sore, dry throats and stuffy noses for the past couple of weeks, and it's definitely worse in the mornings. We live in a newer apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and I keep the AC running 24/7. I've noticed the air just feels very dry and dusty inside. What's the best type of humidifier or air purifier to use here to prevent this, and should I be getting the AC ducts cleaned?

Good question, and a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially in newer, tightly sealed buildings in areas like JVC. Your symptoms—waking up with sore, dry throats and congestion—are classic signs of poor indoor environmental quality, primarily driven by two factors exacerbated by 24/7 AC use: excessively low humidity and airborne particulate matter.

The AC's refrigeration process strips moisture from the air, often dropping relative humidity (RH) well below the recommended 40-60% range. This desiccates your respiratory passages. Simultaneously, the AC system can act as a conduit, circulating dust, mold spores, and other allergens from dirty ducts or the outside environment.

A humidifier is crucial to reintroduce moisture. For a Dubai apartment, I'd recommend a cool-mist ultrasonic model with a built-in hygrometer that auto-regulates to maintain 45-50% RH. Avoid warm-mist types as they can encourage microbial growth. An air purifier is equally important; get a True HEPA model with a carbon pre-filter to capture the fine desert dust (PM2.5/PM10) and any volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Place the purifier in the bedroom.

However, these are symptom mitigators, not a cure. The root cause could be microbial contamination within your AC system. Dubai Municipality's regulations (such as DGS 5.1:2023) emphasize the need for regular duct cleaning and disinfection to prevent health issues. Given your persistent symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We can perform an indoor air quality assessment, including humidity and particulate readings, and conduct a microbiological swab of your AC evaporator coils and ducts to identify any contamination.
