Could my AC be causing our persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My toddler and I have both had a dry, nagging cough for about two weeks that just won't go away, and my throat is constantly scratchy. It's definitely worse in the evenings when we're at home in our Jumeirah apartment. I've been running the AC non-stop because of the heat, but I'm starting to wonder if that's the problem. Is this just something in the air we can wait out, or should I make an appointment at the clinic to get it checked?

Based on your symptoms and location, it is highly plausible that your AC system is a contributing factor. The persistent dry cough and scratchy throat you describe are classic indicators of poor indoor air quality, a common issue in the UAE where sealed environments and continuous AC use are the norm.
The primary culprits we find in Dubai apartments are: 1. Microbial Contamination: AC units, especially if not serviced quarterly as per Dubai Municipality guidelines (DGS 5.1.2), become reservoirs for mold, bacteria, and fungi. These microorganisms are aerosolized and circulated, directly irritating the respiratory tract. 2. Low Humidity: While it's humid outside, ACs over-cool and remove too much moisture from the indoor air. This dry air desiccates your mucous membranes, leading to that persistent scratchy throat and dry cough that worsens over time. 3. Particulate Matter: Dust and fine sand particles (PM2.5/PM10) bypass standard filters, accumulating in ducts and causing mechanical irritation. Your toddler is more susceptible due to their developing respiratory system. This is not something to just wait out, as prolonged exposure can lead to more chronic issues. I strongly recommend a professional indoor environmental quality inspection. We would conduct air and surface sampling to identify specific microbial colonies and measure humidity, CO2, and particulate levels to pinpoint the source. Based on the findings, a targeted remediation plan, such as duct cleaning, coil hygienization, or upgrading filtration to MERV-13, can be implemented. In the meantime, try increasing your indoor humidity slightly with a humidifier in the main living area, especially during sleep. |
