How to clean and prevent AC closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’m starting to see these small black spots on the back wall and on a couple of our leather bags we stored in there. It’s our first winter in a Marina high-rise and I’m worried the humidity is making it worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from spreading before it gets out of control?

Based on the description, that's a classic case of mold growth due to AC condensate leakage, a very common issue in Dubai's high-humidity environment, especially during the winter months when the AC runs less frequently. The black spots are almost certainly mold colonies.

First, for the leather bags: remove them immediately. Wipe them down thoroughly with a soft cloth dampened with a leather cleaner or a diluted solution of isopropyl alcohol (test on an inconspicuous area first). Allow them to dry completely away from the closet. Do not put them back until the source is fixed.

For the wall, do not just wipe it with bleach. This only removes the surface color, not the root structure, and it will return. You need a proper antimicrobial cleaner. For a small area, you can carefully use a commercial mold remover spray, but ensure the area is well-ventilated. Scrub the area gently with a soft brush, then wipe it dry.

However, the critical step is addressing the source. The AC drain line is likely clogged or the drip pan is cracked/overflowing. This requires a professional AC technician to resolve. Until that leak is fixed, any cleaning is temporary. Furthermore, the humidity inside that enclosed closet is a major amplifier. You MUST improve air circulation. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber pack inside.

If the affected area is larger than one square meter, or if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, this indicates a deeper infestation. In such cases, a professional inspection is mandatory to assess the full extent and perform remediation according to UAE health and safety standards.
