How to safely clean AC mold from kids' curtains?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for the past couple of weeks and I just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the back of their bedroom curtains. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I think it's from the constant AC humidity. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without using harsh chemicals around them?

Based on your description, that's classic AC-induced mold, a super common issue here in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Mirdif. The humidity from the AC unit condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold, often on cooler surfaces like curtains. For a small, surface-level growth you feel comfortable handling, here's the safest DIY method for your kids' room.

First, safety is paramount. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Take the curtains down carefully to avoid dispersing spores and take them outside to a well-ventilated balcony or service area. Do not shake them. For cleaning, avoid bleach; it's harsh, the fumes are dangerous for kids, and it only bleaches the mold, not killing it. Instead, use white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Spray the affected area generously and let it sit for at least an hour to penetrate and kill the mold at the root. Then, scrub gently with a soft brush and launder the curtains on the hottest setting the fabric allows, adding a cup of vinegar to the wash cycle. Sun-drying is best, as UV light is a natural disinfectant.

Crucially, cleaning the curtain is a temporary fix if you don't address the source. The AC unit itself is likely contaminated. You need to check and clean the evaporator coils, drain pan, and replace the filters. However, given that your children are already exhibiting respiratory symptoms like persistent coughing, this indicates a significant airborne spore count. DIY cleaning can inadvertently aerosolize more spores, worsening the problem. For the health of your family, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We can identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination within the AC system itself.
