Can I remove small black mold with vinegar or need pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from the last time we had the AC unit serviced and it got a bit damp. It’s only about the size of a coffee mug lid so far, but the room has started to feel a bit stuffy. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service to make sure it’s gone for good?

As a certified mold inspector here in Dubai, I see this exact scenario often, especially after AC servicing where condensation wasn't properly managed.

For a patch that small, you can attempt a DIY cleaning. However, vinegar is not the most effective solution for all mold types, particularly in our humid climate. I recommend a stronger, yet safe, alternative: a solution of diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide from a hardware store. Scrub the area thoroughly, but safely—wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore inhalation. The stuffiness you feel is a significant indicator that spores are already airborne.

Crucially, cleaning the visible spot is only half the job. The root cause is the moisture. You MUST identify and fix the source, which is likely residual dampness from the AC service or a potential leak in the condensate drain line. If you don't, the mold will 100% return.

Given the symptoms (stuffiness) and the common HVAC-related causes here in the UAE, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find hidden moisture you can't see, which is often present behind walls or under floors. This ensures the problem is completely resolved, protecting your health and your property's integrity.
