AC mold spreading after cleaning: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing black spots spreading on the wall and our clothes. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back worse after a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaners, or do I need to call a professional company to get it properly sorted?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of a recurring mold infestation due to an ongoing moisture source, which is unfortunately very common here in Dubai with our AC-dependent climate. The black spots spreading on the wall and clothing are a major red flag.

Vinegar or any surface-level DIY cleaner is a temporary fix at best. The problem is that the mold has likely penetrated deep into the porous building materials (drywall, plaster) and possibly into the HVAC system itself. Wiping the surface only removes the visible colony (the "fruit" of the mold), while the root structure (hyphae) remains embedded and continues to grow, especially with a constant supply of moisture from that leak. This is why it came back worse.

For a situation like this, especially with contamination on personal items like clothes, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY attempts with stronger chemicals like bleach can be hazardous, releasing toxic fumes and often forcing the mold deeper into the material. It also doesn't address the root cause: the AC leak.

Our standard protocol involves:
1. A thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the contamination.
2. Identifying and stopping the moisture source (fixing the AC drain line or condensate pan leak).
3. Containing the area to prevent cross-contamination to other parts of your home.
4. Safe remediation following UAE standards, which includes the removal and disposal of unsalvageable porous materials (like that affected drywall) and specialized cleaning of contents.
5. A post-remediation verification test to ensure the environment is safe.

Given the spread to your belongings, this is beyond a simple clean-up. For a proper assessment and to prevent health risks and further property damage, it's best to call in experts.
