Can I remove bedroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in the Marina apartment has this black speckled stuff growing along the bottom of the wall where our headboard is. We run the AC constantly, but the room still feels damp, and my allergies have been going crazy for the last month. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and if so, what’s the typical cost range for a small area like this?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of AC-induced condensation mold, very common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in areas like Marina with high salinity in the air. That "black speckled stuff" is likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, both of which can severely exacerbate allergies.

While a DIY bleach spray from the supermarket is a common first instinct, I strongly advise against it for several technical reasons. Bleach is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster. It only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root mycotoxins intact. More critically, it can agitate the spores, making them airborne and worsening your allergic reaction. The underlying dampness from the AC unit's condensation line or poor insulation behind the wall must be identified and rectified, or the mold will return rapidly.

Under UAE civil defense and public health regulations, any mold remediation that involves disturbing over 1 square meter of contaminated material should be handled by licensed professionals to prevent cross-contamination. Your health symptoms are a major red flag.

For a small area like the bottom of a bedroom wall, a professional inspection and remediation would typically range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500. This includes a full hygienization report, which is often required by landlords for documentation. Don't risk your health with a DIY approach that will likely fail.

Call us for a professional assessment at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We can identify the moisture source and ensure it's removed safely and permanently.
