Can AC mold cause our headaches and scratchy throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom seems to be blowing a faint musty smell that’s gotten worse over the last couple of weeks. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and my husband has been waking up with headaches. I’ve checked for visible mold around the vents but can't see anything obvious. Could this smell from the AC be making us sick, and who should I call to properly inspect it in Dubai?

Yes, absolutely. The symptoms you're describing – the persistent musty odor combined with morning scratchy throat and headaches – are classic indicators of poor indoor air quality, and your AC unit is the prime suspect. In the UAE's climate, where we rely on AC systems 24/7 for most of the year, they are the most common source of such issues.

The musty smell is a microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC), a gas produced by actively growing mold and bacteria. When your AC blows, it aerosolizes these particles and spores, distributing them throughout your bedroom. You're then breathing this contaminated air in for 6-8 hours straight while sleeping. This can directly irritate the mucous membranes in your throat and sinuses, causing that scratchy feeling. The headaches are often a result of your body's inflammatory response to these foreign particles or, in some cases, a reaction to the MVOCs themselves.

The fact that you can't see mold is very common. The growth is likely hidden within the AC system itself – on the cooling coils, in the drip pan, or deep within the ductwork. This is especially prevalent here due to our high humidity levels, which cause condensation inside the units, creating the perfect damp environment for microbial growth.

You need a professional inspection. DIY checks are insufficient. In Dubai, look for a company certified to inspect and remediate according to the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) standards or similar UAE best practices, which mandate specific protocols for indoor air quality. They will use tools like borescopes to look inside ducts and tape lift or air sampling to identify the specific type of contaminant.

Do not ignore this. For a proper assessment and quote, I strongly recommend you call the experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They can identify the source and perform a certified hygienization treatment to eliminate the problem at its root.
