Can I clean AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind my bedroom wardrobe. I didn't think much of it, but now there's a patch of black and green speckles spreading on the wall and the room has a damp, earthy smell. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this last week.
Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company?

Based on the signs you've described—the AC water leak, the black and green speckles, and that persistent damp, earthy smell—you are almost certainly dealing with active mold growth. This is a very common issue here in the UAE due to our high humidity and the constant strain on AC units.
While a small patch on a non-porous surface might be a DIY job, your situation is different and warrants caution. The leak from the AC has likely saturated the wallboard behind the wardrobe, which is a porous material. Bleach only kills surface mold on non-porous materials; it cannot penetrate porous surfaces to kill the root structure (hyphae). Furthermore, the moisture source (the leaking AC) must be fixed first, or the mold will return rapidly. Attempting to clean this yourself risks cross-contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system by aerosolizing spores. For a case like this, especially with visible spreading and a confirmed moisture source, professional assessment is strongly recommended. We follow strict UAE health and safety guidelines for containment and removal to ensure the problem is solved at its source. My advice is to call in a professional for an inspection. They can assess the extent of the damage behind the wall and properly remediate it. For a certified assessment, you can reach our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. |
