Black mold in closet: DIY bleach or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black specks appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it has a damp feel to it, which I guess makes sense after all the humidity we've had. Is this something I can just wipe down with bleach myself, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional to look at?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially in closets on exterior walls. The black specks and damp feel you're describing are classic indicators of hidden mold growth, likely caused by a combination of our high ambient humidity and a possible thermal bridge or minor condensation issue on that outside wall.
Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is a surface-level disinfectant that is largely ineffective on porous materials like drywall. It can actually aggravate the situation by releasing mold spores into the air and, more critically, its high water content can provide the moisture needed for the mold to grow back even stronger. The dampness suggests an ongoing moisture source that bleach will not address. Given the location on an exterior wall, this is a potential sign of a bigger problem. The issue could be inadequate insulation leading to condensation, a tiny leak in the building envelope, or even compromised vapor barriers – all common challenges in the UAE's climate. Disturbing it yourself risks widespread spore dispersal throughout your home. For a proper resolution, a professional inspection is essential. Our certified inspectors use tools like borescopes and moisture meters to investigate within the wall cavity without unnecessary demolition, identifying the true source of the moisture and the full extent of the contamination. This allows for targeted, effective remediation that follows UAE health and environmental guidelines, rather than a temporary cosmetic fix. I recommend you call for a professional assessment immediately. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. |
