Best renter-friendly way to remove bathroom grout mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It's the bathroom my wife and I use, which doesn't have a window. I'm worried it's been there a while and we didn't see it because it's mostly behind the toilet. What's the most effective, renter-friendly way to clean this off and stop it from coming back?

Hey there. That's a super common issue here in Dubai, especially in windowless bathrooms where the humidity just gets trapped. The black spots you're seeing are almost certainly mold, thriving on the organic matter in the grout and the constant moisture from showers.

For a renter-friendly DIY approach, your best first step is to create a paste using baking soda and a small amount of water. Scrub it into the grout with an old toothbrush. This is abrasive enough to remove the surface growth without damaging the grout. After scrubbing, spray on distilled white vinegar (the mild acid helps kill the spores) and let it fizz for 10-15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. For persistent spots, a commercial hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is very effective and less harsh than bleach.

The real key, though, is stopping it from coming back. you absolutely must improve ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the fan is weak or doesn't exist, get a portable dehumidifier and use it religiously. Wipe down the wet surfaces of the shower and walls after use to remove standing moisture.

However, since you mentioned it's been there a while and is hidden, there's a chance the moisture has penetrated deeper. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, it could indicate a hidden leak from the toilet seal or plumbing, which is a bigger issue that your landlord needs to address. In that case, a professional inspection is wise to assess the full extent and identify the true moisture source. We can provide a certified report for your landlord.
