How to safely clean mold from toys in my home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m getting worried. I just pulled out a bunch of toys from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and noticed a few boxes in the corner were damp with this dark, fuzzy mold on them—I think it’s from the last time we had that heavy dew a few weeks ago. What’s the safest way to clean this "mold water" mess without putting my family’s health at risk?

Hey there, so sorry to hear about this, it's a super common issue in Jumeirah with the high humidity and that heavy dew we get, it just gets into everything. First off, stop right there—those coughing kids are a major red flag. That dark, fuzzy mold is almost certainly releasing spores into your air, which is likely the irritant.

For your safety, do NOT attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, making the air quality worse. Standard household cleaners like bleach are ineffective on porous materials (like cardboard boxes) and can actually feed the mold, plus the fumes are dangerous in an enclosed space.

Here's what you NEED to do:

1. Isolate the area immediately. Close the door to that storage room and if possible, seal the gap underneath with a towel to prevent spores spreading to the rest of the house.

2. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, remediation companies like ours follow strict guidelines based on international standards (like IICRC S520) but tailored for our specific climate. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source of the moisture—because if you dont address that, the mold will 100% come back. The "mold water" you saw means the problem is likely more widespread than just those boxes.

3. For a company to be reputable here, they MUST provide a detailed report and a clearance certificate post-remediation, which is often needed for landlords or for your own peace of mind.

Please, for the health of your family, get a pro to assess this. We can properly contain the area with negative air machines, use hospital-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air, and advise on what toys can be salvaged and how. Give our team a call to schedule an inspection. 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
