How to permanently remove black mold from bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's master bathroom has started turning black in the corners, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I think it's been slowly getting worse over the summer with the humidity. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back after a few days. What's the most effective, long-term solution to kill this mold for good and stop it from returning in our bathroom?

The black discoloration in your grout is a classic sign of a recurring mold issue, very common in Jumeirah villas due to our high ambient humidity. Bleach is a surface-level fix; it doesn't penetrate porous grout to kill the root structure (hyphae) and can actually feed the mold by adding moisture.

The long-term solution requires a two-pronged attack: remediation and prevention. First, the existing mold must be professionally removed. For a small area, you can attempt this using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide (check availability at ACE Hardware) or a strong solution of white vinegar and baking soda, scrubbed into the grout. However, if the staining is widespread or has been recurring, the mold may have penetrated deeply or even be behind the tiles. In such cases, DIY methods will fail.

The critical second step is addressing the moisture source. In Dubai bathrooms, this is almost always inadequate ventilation. Ensure your exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room size and that it runs for at least 30-45 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet surfaces, including those hard-to-reach areas behind the toilet, with a squeegee after use. Consider applying a high-quality penetrating grout sealer after a professional clean to create a moisture barrier. For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and ensure remediation meets Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for indoor air quality. If the problem keeps coming back, it's time to call the pros. Give us a call at 800-MOLDS for a proper assessment and permanent solution.
