Black spots in closet: DIY or professional mold remediation?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these small black spots, and all our clothes have this damp, earthy smell we just can't get rid of. It started right after that unusually humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back within days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth, and unfortunately, vinegar is rarely effective for more than a superficial clean here in the UAE. The high humidity we experienced recently, combined with the lack of air circulation inside a closet against an interior wall, creates the perfect incubator. Those black spots are likely the visible spore colonies, and that persistent earthy smell is Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (mVOCs), a clear sign of an active infestation.
Attempting a stronger DIY cleaner is a significant risk. Bleach or other aggressive chemicals can sometimes appear to work on the surface but often force the mold deeper into the porous drywall or backing of the closet. This doesn't address the root cause—the moisture source—and the mold will almost certainly return, often worse than before. In a confined space like a closet, aggressive cleaning can also aerosolize a massive amount of spores, contaminating your entire wardrobe and the bedroom air, which poses a health risk. Given the rapid recurrence you've described, this is not a surface-level issue. The wall cavity itself may be compromised. A professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture (could be a minor condensation issue or something more serious) and take air samples to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, as per Dubai Municipality's strict guidelines for indoor environmental quality. For a proper assessment and a guaranteed solution, it's best to call in our specialists. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation. In the meantime, try to improve ventilation in the room and consider using a dehumidifier to help slow the spread until we can take a look. |
