How to permanently stop mold in my AC closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get patches of black mold, especially after we run the AC non-stop during the summer. I’m in a Marina high-rise and I know the humidity is a problem. I’ve wiped it down with bleach a couple of times, but it just comes back a few weeks later. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this from recurring for good?

That's a classic and very common issue we see in Marina and other high-rises here in Dubai. The problem you're describing is almost certainly due to condensation forming on the cold surface of the AC supply duct or the wall behind it, creating a constant source of moisture for mold to feed on. Bleach only removes the visible stain; it doesn't address the moisture source or kill the spores at the root, which is why it keeps coming back.
The most effective long-term solution requires a two-pronged approach. First, you need a professional mold inspection to identify the exact condensation point and the mold species present (some are more hazardous than others). We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact temperature differential causing the condensation. The fix usually involves properly insulating the cold AC ductwork within that closet to prevent the surface temperature from dropping below the dew point. This is a technical job that often requires accessing the void behind the closet. Second, addressing the ambient humidity is crucial. For a closet on an external wall, ensure the door is louvred or has ventilation gaps to allow air circulation. Running a small, standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can significantly reduce the overall moisture load, making it harder for mold to establish itself. For a permanent fix, this isn't typically a DIY job. The improper handling of mold can aerosolize spores and spread the problem. We're certified under UAE's strict environmental and health guidelines to perform this remediation safely and effectively. I'd recommend getting a professional assessment.
