Safest way to clean bedroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that go away after we leave for work. I'm worried it's the mold making us sick. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without spreading it everywhere?

Hi there, and thanks for reaching out. That sounds like a very concerning situation, especially with the health symptoms you're both experiencing. As a certified mold inspector here in Dubai, I'd strongly advise against a full DIY clean-up in this case. The combination of visible growth and correlated health effects like persistent headaches and congestion suggests a more serious issue that needs proper assessment.
However, if you're determined to assess the area yourself before calling a pro, here is the safest approach. First, DO NOT disturb it with a dry cloth or brush – this will aerosolize the spores and make the problem much worse. Your essential gear: an N95 mask (not a surgical mask), nitrile gloves, and safety goggles. Mix a solution of 80% water and 20% white vinegar in a spray bottle – this is effective and less noxious than bleach in an enclosed space. Lightly mist the affected area to dampen the spores, then gently wipe with a disposable cloth. Discard the cloth and seal it in a plastic bag immediately after. Good ventilation is key; open all windows and use a fan to blow air outwards. Crucially, this is only for very small, surface-level spots (less than 1 sq. ft). Given the location behind a wardrobe – a classic spot for hidden condensation and more extensive growth – and your health symptoms, a professional inspection is absolutely warranted. We use moisture meters, thermal cameras, and air sampling to find the moisture source and see the full extent, which is almost always bigger than what's visible. For a proper assessment and safe remediation that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines, please give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. It's not worth risking your health. |
