How to permanently stop closet mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started to get a white, fuzzy mold on our leather bags and shoes. The AC vent is in the main room, so I think the lack of airflow and the humidity are causing it, especially now during the summer. I've wiped it down with vinegar, but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks.
What's the most effective way to stop this mold from returning for good, and should I invest in a dehumidifier specifically for that closet?

Based on your description of the issue on the outer wall of your Jumeirah villa, you're dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, extremely common in Dubai's summer climate. The temperature differential between the hot exterior wall and your cool interior creates a perfect breeding ground.
Vinegar is a temporary, superficial fix that doesn't address the root cause: excess moisture and lack of air circulation. Here's a permanent solution protocol: First, the affected items need proper remediation. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild soap, then dry them thoroughly in a well-ventilated area. Never put them back until the closet environment is controlled. For the closet itself, you must increase air flow. Leave the closet doors open whenever possible. If the AC vent is in the main room, ensure the bedroom door is open to allow cooled, de-conditioned air to circulate into the closet space. A small, battery-operated closet fan can significantly help if structural changes aren't possible. A dehumidifier is an excellent investment. For a closet, a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier is ideal. It will actively pull moisture from the air, keeping relative humidity below 60%—the critical threshold for mold growth. Silica gel desiccant bags can provide supplemental help. Crucially, inspect the exterior wall for any hidden leaks or insulation flaws, which are a major contributor. If the mold persists despite these measures, the problem may be more extensive within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection is vital to identify hidden moisture sources and develop a comprehensive remediation plan, in line with UAE health and safety standards for indoor air quality.
