How to dry damp carpet and prevent mold after storm?« Back to Previous Page

We've been staying with family since the storm, and just got back to our villa in Jumeirah to find the guest room carpet is still damp underneath and there's a faint, earthy smell coming from the closet. I’m worried about mold starting to grow behind the skirting boards. What’s the most effective way to dry everything out completely before it becomes a bigger problem?

Based on your description, this is a classic scenario we see after heavy storms in Dubai, especially in villas where water can seep under carpets and into wall cavities. The earthy smell is a significant red flag; it strongly indicates microbial growth has likely already begun.

The most effective way is a multi-step process. First, the carpet must be lifted immediately. In our climate, the high humidity prevents damp materials from drying on their own, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. You need to extract the moisture from the concrete slab underneath using industrial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers. Standard home appliances are utterly ineffective for this. The closet will require the same treatment, and the skirting boards should be removed to allow airflow into the wall cavity to dry any condensation or seepage that has occurred there.

Given the smell is present, a simple drying procedure may not be sufficient. The hidden spaces likely require professional hygienization to address any nascent mold colonies before they sporulate and become a health hazard and a much larger remediation project.

For a case like this in Jumeirah, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our teams use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint exactly where the water has migrated behind walls and under floors, which is impossible to assess visually. We can then execute a controlled drying protocol to prevent the structural damage and health risks associated with mold.

Don't risk it. For a proper assessment and to prevent a major issue, please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can have a team there today to evaluate the situation.
