Can I fix a musty closet myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in our villa in Springs has started to smell really musty, and I’m worried the recent humidity made something moldy in there. I’ve pulled everything out and cleaned the walls with bleach, but the smell comes back within a day. Is this something I can fix myself with a dehumidifier, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company, and what would that typically cost here?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of hidden microbial growth, and bleach is unfortunately not a solution for this in our UAE climate. The high ambient humidity, especially recently, provides the perfect breeding ground for mold spores within your wall cavities or under the flooring, which surface cleaning cannot reach.

The immediate return of the odor indicates the moisture source is active and the colony is established. A dehumidifier is an excellent preventative tool but will not remediate an existing problem. It manages the ambient relative humidity, but cannot extract the moisture already absorbed into the building materials (plaster, concrete, MDF shelves) which is feeding the mold.

For a villa in Springs, common culprits are a small, unnoticed leak from an adjacent bathroom pipe, condensation forming on cold water lines running in the wall, or even moisture wicking up from the slab foundation. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source and extent of the contamination without destructive investigation.

The cost for a professional assessment and remediation in Dubai can vary widely based on the scope, starting from around AED 1,500 for a localized area like a closet. DIY attempts often spread spores and exacerbate the issue.
