Mold in Dubai villa closet: health risk and DIY or pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had a damp, earthy smell since the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago, and this morning I noticed some fuzzy black spots on a leather bag stored in the back. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm getting worried about our health. Is this something I need to get a professional mold tester out for immediately, or can I try cleaning it myself first?

Based on the symptoms you've described—the persistent damp smell since the rains and the visible growth on the leather—I would strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend a professional mold inspection immediately. Here's why:

The fuzzy black spots are a clear visual confirmation of an active colony. The musty odor indicates microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which are a byproduct of mold metabolism, and your wife's stuffy nose is a potential health reaction to these spores and compounds. In the UAE's climate, especially after significant rain events, the high humidity can quickly lead to colonization within wall cavities or under flooring, far beyond what's visible on the surface. Cleaning the visible spot on the bag is a temporary fix that does not address the hidden moisture source or the root contamination.

Attempting to clean it yourself can inadvertently aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the indoor air quality and health symptoms. Furthermore, UAE regulations and landlord-tenant laws often require professional assessment and remediation to ensure the property is returned to a safe and habitable condition, which is crucial for documentation purposes.

Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/o-surface sampling to identify the full extent of the infestation and the moisture source. This is not just about removing what you see; it's about ensuring the problem is solved at its core to protect your health and property.

For a situation like this in a Jumeirah villa, do not hesitate. Call our team for a comprehensive assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
