Should I report a musty wardrobe smell to my landlord?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the bedroom has started giving off a really strong, damp smell, especially when I open it in the morning. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather turned humid a few weeks back, and I’ve even noticed a few dark spots on the wall behind my clothes. As a tenant, am I responsible for dealing with this myself, or should I be reporting this to my landlord to investigate for a potential leak or mold issue?

Based on the symptoms you've described—strong damp odor worsening with humidity and visible dark spots on the wall—this is a classic indicator of active microbial growth, most likely mold, due to excess moisture. In the UAE's high humidity climate, this is a common but serious indoor environmental quality issue.

As a tenant, your responsibility under typical Dubai rental contracts (as per the RERA tenancy law) is to report any maintenance issues related to the building's structure or systems (like AC or plumbing) to the landlord or property management immediately. A musty smell originating from within a wall cavity strongly suggests a potential leak from plumbing, faulty AC drainage, or water seepage through the building envelope, all of which are the landlord's responsibility to investigate and remediate.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold can release spores and exacerbate the problem. You should report this in writing to your landlord or property manager right away, detailing the smell and the visible spots, and request a professional inspection. They are obligated to address the source of the moisture.

For a proper assessment and remediation, a certified company should conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the exact source and extent of the contamination. We strongly recommend a professional evaluation. You can call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate consultation.
