How to permanently remove bathroom mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bathroom's ceiling and the top corner of the walls are getting covered in black mold, especially after my long showers. I live in a studio in JLT and the ventilation just isn't great, even with the window open. I’ve scrubbed it with bleach twice now, but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold for good and prevent it in our humid climate?

The recurring black mold in your JLT bathroom is a classic symptom of chronic excess moisture, which is extremely common in our Gulf climate. Bleach is a common but ineffective solution; it only bleaches the visible colour on non-porous surfaces and does not kill the root structure (hyphae) within the building materials. For a permanent solution, you need a multi-pronged approach.
First, the root cause: inadequate ventilation. Simply opening a window in Dubai's high external humidity often isn't enough. You must run the exhaust fan for at least 30-45 minutes after every shower. If your fan is weak or old, upgrading to a higher-CFM model is a critical investment. After showers, also use a squeegee on wet walls and tiles to remove standing water. For remediation, scrubbing with bleach is not recommended. You need to use an EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner specifically designed for mold remediation. These products penetrate porous surfaces like paint and drywall to kill the mold at its root. However, based on your description of the extent (ceiling and corners), the mold has likely infiltrated the substrate. Surface cleaning will not be sufficient long-term. In the UAE, proper remediation often requires partial removal and replacement of affected drywall or ceiling tiles, followed by application of anti-microbial coatings before repainting. This is not a DIY job, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. For a studio in JLT, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to determine the full extent and provide a definitive solution to prevent it from returning. call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. |
