Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa has had this damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months, and I finally found the source: a patch of black mold growing on the back wall behind our clothes. We run the AC constantly but the humidity just seems to get trapped in there. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from ACE, or is it absolutely necessary to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a small area like this?

Hey there. That's a very common issue we see in villas here, especially in closets on exterior walls. The constant battle between our AC and the high ambient humidity creates perfect conditions for mold.

While a small patch might seem like a DIY job, I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is mostly water, which actually feeds the mold root system (mycelium) on porous surfaces like drywall. It might bleach the visible surface stain, but the organism will remain and grow back. For a proper DIY attempt, you'd need a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not bleach.

However, the real question isn't just killing what you see. You need to identify and correct the moisture source. In JVT, this is often due to a slight condensation issue from the AC supply duct, a small plumbing leak in the wall, or even external moisture intrusion. Without fixing this, it will 100% return.

Furthermore, Dubai Civil Defence and local health regulations have specific guidelines for mold remediation to ensure spores are properly contained and the underlying cause is resolved, especially in residential properties.

For a situation that's been ongoing for months, my professional recommendation is to get a certified inspection. We can use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source behind that wall that you can't see. The cost for a small contained area like a closet typically starts around AED 1,500 - AED 2,500 for full professional remediation, which includes containment, removal, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence.

It's worth getting it done right. For a proper assessment, you can call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
