Could dampness and mold be causing my children's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter have both had this persistent, rattly cough for over a week now, especially at night in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira and I’ve noticed some slight dampness on the wall near the AC unit. Could this mold be causing their coughs, and should I get them tested for something specific?

Based on my professional experience with indoor air quality here in Dubai, the symptoms you describe are highly consistent with exposure to mold, especially given the dampness you've observed. That persistent, rattly cough, particularly worse at night, is a classic presentation. In the UAE's humid climate, AC units are a primary culprit. If the drain line is blocked or the unit is not properly maintained, condensation accumulates, creating the perfect damp environment for mold growth within the unit and on adjacent walls. The spores are then circulated directly into the room air.
Children are significantly more vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems and higher breathing rates. Prolonged exposure can lead to more serious respiratory issues and allergies. I strongly recommend against just a surface clean, as the problem is often hidden within the AC ductwork or inside the wall cavity. For your children's health, a professional inspection is critical. We would conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air/o-surface sampling for mold speciation, to identify the exact type and concentration of spores. This is important because some species common in damp UAE buildings, like Aspergillus, can be more problematic. The results will dictate the proper remediation protocol, not just a superficial wipe-down. Please get in touch with our team for a comprehensive assessment. We adhere to the strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for environmental health and remediation.
