Are black spots from AC mold making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little for the past few weeks and now I’m seeing these black spots around the vent on the wall. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and I’ve been waking up with a headache every morning since it started. Could this be mold making us sick, and what should we do first to fix it properly?

Based on the symptoms you've described—stuffy nose and morning headaches—coupled with visible black spots around the AC vent, there is a very high probability that you are dealing with a mold issue that is affecting your health. The persistent moisture from the AC leak creates the perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly in our UAE climate where high ambient humidity can exacerbate the problem.

The first and most critical step is to immediately stop using that AC unit. This will prevent it from actively dispersing mold spores throughout your bedroom. Do not attempt to clean the black spots yourself, as improper disturbance can cause a significant release of spores and mycotoxins, worsening your exposure and contaminating other areas.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is absolutely non-negotiable. DIY tests from hardware stores are not reliable. A certified inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including air and surface sampling, to identify the specific type(s) of mold present and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads inside the AC ductwork and behind walls.

In Dubai, remediation must adhere to strict standards to ensure the mold is completely removed, not just superficially cleaned. Our teams use containment barriers, negative air pressure machines, and HEPA filtration to safely remediate the area, followed by post-clearance testing to guarantee the environment is safe.

Given your health symptoms, I would strongly advise you to get a professional evaluation as soon as possible. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Let's get your home back to a healthy state.
