Can I fix shower mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our villa in Jumeirah Park has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. We run the exhaust fan, but the humidity just seems to stick around. Is this something I can fix myself with a kit from ACE, or is this a job for a professional, and roughly how much would that cost for a standard-sized bathroom?

Hi there, that's a very common issue we see in villas here in Jumeirah Park, especially with our humid climate. What you’re describing with the black mold under the silicone is a major red flag.

While surface mold on grout can sometimes be scrubbed away, finding a significant colony hidden beneath sealant indicates a persistent moisture problem that a simple clean won't fix. The musty smell confirms active microbial growth. The exhaust fan might not be powerful enough or could be venting improperly, which is common.

For a DIY attempt, you'd need to completely remove all contaminated silicone, treat the subsurface with a professional-grade biocide (not just bleach from ACE, which only bleaches the color and doesn't kill the roots), and then re-seal with a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone. This requires skill to ensure a perfect, waterproof seal; if done incorrectly, moisture will get trapped again and the mold will return quickly, often worse than before.

Frankly, given the extent you’ve described, this is a job for a professional. We need to assess the potential for hidden moisture within the wall cavity, which is a serious integrity issue. Our inspection and remediation process follows strict Dubai Municipality guidelines to ensure the problem is solved at its source.

For a standard ensuite bathroom, professional mold remediation can typically range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the contamination and any necessary repairs.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection to assess the full scope. You can call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a free, no-obligation assessment. It’s better to be safe and get it done properly.
