Is bedroom mold dangerous; can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right above the AC vent and has gotten much worse since the humid weather started a few weeks ago. I'm worried it's making us sick. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Excellent and very common question. What you're describing is a classic scenario we see daily in Dubai and across the UAE, especially with the recent spike in humidity.
The short answer is yes, bedroom mold can be dangerous, and no, you should not clean it yourself with bleach. Here's why: The black spots you see are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (toxic black mold) or Aspergillus, both of which produce mycotoxins and allergens. In an enclosed space like a bedroom where you spend 6-8 hours sleeping, prolonged exposure can lead to serious health issues: chronic sinusitis, persistent coughing, headaches, skin irritation, and aggravated asthma. Your concern about it making you sick is absolutely valid. Bleach is a terrible solution for porous surfaces like drywall and ceiling plaster. It only bleaches the visible surface mold but does not kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the material. The chlorine in bleach also adds moisture, essentially feeding the mold and causing it to return worse than before, which aligns with your observation. The location is the critical factor. Its position directly above the AC vent indicates a severe condensation issue, likely due to a poorly insulated cooling duct or a negative air pressure problem in the apartment. This is a systemic issue that DIY cleaning will never fix. Under UAE civil law, especially in rental apartments, this is a significant habitability issue that your landlord is obligated to address. A professional inspection is not just recommended; it is essential. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture hidden within the wall cavity before any remediation can begin. For a proper assessment and a lasting solution, please call our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Do not disturb the area before testing, as this can release a large amount of spores into your living space. |
