Can I clean closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has a patch of black speckles that I just noticed when I was switching out my winter clothes. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity we had last month. I'm worried it's making my allergies act up. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call in a professional to check it out?

Hey there, thanks for reaching out. That’s a super common issue here in Dubai, especially after a humid spell like we just had. The black speckles you’re describing are almost certainly mold, likely feeding off the cellulose in the drywall or even the dust on your clothes.

Honestly, for a small, surface-level patch that you just noticed, a DIY approach might be possible, but you have to be extremely careful. Bleach is a common go-to, but it's actually not recommended on porous surfaces like drywall or wood. It only bleaches the mold on the surface and doesn't kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the material, so it will almost certainly grow back. A better DIY solution is a mix of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, scrubbing gently to avoid releasing spores.

However, the fact that you're already experiencing allergy symptoms is a major red flag. This indicates you're already being exposed to mycotoxins and spores, which a simple cleaning could aerosolize and make much worse. Furthermore, the location is a concern—mold on an interior wall can sometimes be a sign of a hidden moisture issue within the wall cavity itself, perhaps from a small pipe leak or condensation, which a surface clean won't fix.

Given the health risks and the specific building regulations in the UAE that often require professional assessment for habitability, my strong recommendation is to get a professional inspection. We can perform air quality and surface tests to identify the exact species (some are far more hazardous than others) and locate the true moisture source. This isn't just about cleaning; it's about ensuring it doesn't come back and that your home is safe.
